When Doctrine Gets Personal: Why I Wrote Contending for the Truth

Most Christians know what they believe, but far fewer know why they believe it. And fewer still have taken the time to compare the popular teachings in Christian culture with what the Bible actually says. That tension—between tradition and Scripture, assumption and truth—is where Contending for the Truth lives.

This book wasn’t written to introduce the basics of Christianity. It’s for those who’ve walked with Christ for some time and are ready to examine their faith more closely. I take on doctrines that are debated, misunderstood, or simply taken for granted, and I challenge readers to go back to Scripture itself.

Here’s a brief excerpt from the introduction:

“This book is for those who want to grow deeper in their faith by testing common Christian beliefs against Scripture. It isn’t meant to cover the basics—instead, it refines and challenges assumptions, asking hard questions many avoid. My process begins with Scripture, not scholars, allowing God’s Word to speak first. Only after that do I engage with other theologians, to test and sharpen my conclusions. Ultimately, my goal is to help you become a ‘doer of the word, and not a hearer only’ (James 1:22), confident that God’s truth can withstand scrutiny—and change lives.”

That’s the heart of what I hope this book accomplishes. If you’ve ever struggled with a teaching that seemed more cultural than biblical, or if you’re tired of hearing “this is just what we believe” as the only defense for a doctrine, then this book is for you.
